Whose Lives Are Changed by Crowdsourcing?

David Cohn's picture

Whose lives are being changed by crowdsourcing? How? Is this a revolution for the middle to upper classes? What role do access and
training play in expanding or limiting the number of people affected by crowdsourcing?

Thanks..

I think that crowdsourcing

I think that crowdsourcing is very important in a persons life. Personally I have more faith in what my friends tell me about something that what a publicity tell me. A friend of mine had a problem with narconon and the best informations we had was those from friends, family and peoples that had this problem too.

Depending

Depending on your historic lens, crowdsourcing seems to an evolutionary step (natural?) in production models. order viagra , cheap viagra But the models provided – “Tapping,” “Creating,” and “Filtering” – seem to be sensible extensions of previous models of production. These steps seem to be more logical than revolutionary in their nature, innovative yes, but radical?

Where are the changes?

renrusso's picture

First of all, there is the geographic issue. As you guys might have noticed, I'm not a native english speaker and crowdsourcing initiatives are not working in emerging countries as well as they are in developed ones. I mean, in Brazil they aren´t. I don't see a particular reason for this, but lack of access to Internet is indeed one of the obstacles. And this must be seen as an opportunity for all of us who want to make this really democratic.
Then there is the social classes barrier, which comes along with that: less money means less access to information and less colaboration on the web. I think these are basically first words, but they are a good point to start with.

Digital divide

Raul Larsen's picture

Good point Renato! What are social consequences of a more participated Internet... there where participation is possible? How big is the crowd in crowdsourcing, and how is it composed? Who is not in the crowd?

I propose to treat the argument as a new assignment, I think it deserves.

Getting Ahead of Ourselves?

-e.mo-'s picture

“Revolution?” I fail to see the revolutionizing aspect of crowdsourcing. Perhaps to me the word is charged with meaning that implies utter overhaul of system processes. Revolution tends to invoke thoughts of qualitatively different environments, distinctively separate on multiple levels from previous ones.

Hopefully I don’t come off antagonistic; I just enjoy playing devil’s advocate in order to stimulate dialogue.

The Revolution Will Soon Roll Right Over Us

oldfogey's picture

There certainly is a revolution on the horizon. This revolution is attacking problems like ducks in a row. It's right over there, right behind that crowd of bloggers who are able to see behind the bushes. They have already helped trim the political bushes and if some have their way the next bush to be trimmed will be the Learning Tree. The Revolutionary Crowd is beginning to feel powerful. They see they have made a difference when it comes to politics. The next duck in the row will be education.

Crowdsourced education

Jerry, I've this on my to-do list for far too long now: write up a backgrounder and assignment list on crowdsourced education projects. Want to help me out with it?

If you're game, here's what Wikipedia has on open source education, just to get you started (you can find the links here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source):

Within the academic community, there is discussion about expanding what could be called the "intellectual commons" (analogous to the creative commons). Proponents of this view have hailed the Connexions Project at Rice University, OpenCourseWare project at MIT, Eugene Thacker's article on "Open Source DNA", the "Open Source Cultural Database", openwebschool, and Wikipedia as examples of applying open source outside the realm of computer software.

Open source curricula are instructional resources whose digital source can be freely used, distributed and modified.

Another strand to the academic community is in the area of research. Many funded research projects produce software as part of their work. There is an increasing interest in making the outputs of such projects available under an open source license. In the UK the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) has developed a policy on open source software. JISC also funds a development service called OSS Watch which acts as an advisory service for higher and further education institutions wishing to use, contribute to and develop open source software.

Will Work on Wikipedia Leads

oldfogey's picture

Lauren, thanks for heading me on a task. All of a sudden I have much to do. BTW, before I forget, AZ may want to check out the Meeting of the Newsvine Minds to take place in May. More than a few of the Newsviners participating in our joint exercise should be there.

Indeed, I will work on Crowdsourced educations and the opportunities presented. I would suggest there will one day be Crowdsourced Universities on line that will be accredited to grant degrees. I know there are some quickie diplomas available now but I am talking about degrees that will be respected by all. Maybe the nucleus will expand from here.

Will be back to you asap, my copy boy will drop my efforts in your basket.

Thank You

A pardigm shift

renrusso's picture

It would be great if that worked and this is what I really hope. The next duck to be shot, then, is a paradigm: most teachers see themselves as experts (and this brings all the discussion about it again). It's not an easy task to change their mind on that matter. The system used in Brazil (sorry about putting the geographic aspect again, but that's good to give you guys a different point of view) has little efficiecy, specially on children education. It's abandoned and little has been done to change that. It's hard to believe the authorities will accept such a paradigm shift, which is the way I see this change.
When it comes to Universities, opennes is more acceptable, because they're more democratic and have more autonomy, and in my point of view it's a good place to start the (r)evolution in education.

"Embrace the inevitable"

It looks nice on paper, but reality isn't so easy. Take a good look on University's problems and you'll see they are caused by the lack of previous good education. A good place to start would be the kindergartens. Kids are much more open minded than adults.

Agreed ...

Jeff Howe's picture

No one would love to claim the mantle of "revolutionary" more than me (I coined the term crowdsourcing), and I'll admit to having even tried it on for size in one or two articles and blog posts before deleting it. But I think you're right, e.mo -- revolutions (the October Revolution in Russia, the revolution of the Estates General in France, et. al.) consist of a radical departure from the social or economic or political status quo. Did Louis XVI see the French Revolution coming? Hell no. He knew the peasants were restless, knew some minor reforms were in order, but he didn't think he'd be deposed (much less beheaded) until half of Paris was on the march to Versailles. In other words, it was more a sudden fracture in the progression toward greater political representation (Britain serves as a nice counterpoint in this regard) than any sort of evolutionary development. Revolutions, I think, are that rarest of historical event, when the fates of nations turn on a simple misunderstanding between a King and his subjects, or whether a certain firebrand misses a bus one morning.

I would argue (and am, in my book) that the rise of Crowdsourcing, on the other hand, was not only possible but inevitable in our current age. You can trace its philosophy and methodology to the open source software movement, the appetite and talent of the crowd to decades of over-education and unfulfilling employment and the radical drop in the means of creative production (I'm not just talking about digital camcorders here--anyone seen Google's new Sketch-Up software? The makers of CAD software should be very, very afraid). All of this is a long-winded way of saying that Crowdsourcing's roots run fairly deep, and are easily excavated.

That said, I believe we're interpreting David's question a little literally. If crowdsourcing is widely adopted, it will certainly be transformative event for large swaths of people, which is how I read his question.

Crowdsourcing and Revolution

Tina Stephens's picture

I'm enjoying reading how we think the world around us is changing and what causes it. Revolution? somewhat, Evolution? difinitely. I think of the show with William Shatner "How Star Trek changed the World". While it was campy and amusing it made a point, in that, Television changed how society viewed the World. It allowed several generations to gradually glimpse other parts of the planet, to dream of how we would change our World, and as it became more available to the rest of the World allowed other cultures to see beyond propaganda.

In the past TV was fraught with rules, restrictions and biased programming admittedly, but we have progressed a bit through determination. Satellite radio is expanding the "open-source" possibilities with fewer restrictions, but the Internet remains the largest means with which to gather information, data, opinions and to communicate, and again we are struggling to keep it free from government restrictions and censorship.
The Internet is Great! You have choices. You can converse in real time, or have discussions in email, blogs, and articles with people in your own area or across the sea. To me, Dialogue is the mother of Revolution; the ideas and talk from a diverse population coming together and then action being taken to change what they don't like. Evolution is how those changes affect our lives.

As more and more smaller countries gain access to information and the internet, they become fascinated with what it can do for them. While there will always be violence, in general the hope is that this will bring people together and end war. As Techonology races forward, hopefully more outdated, prejudiced ways of thinking (and behaving) will fall to the wayside in a puff of smoke. Not to squash those diverse people's moral and ethical beliefs necessarily, but to change how they act upon misinformation and allow them to form their own opinions on other cultures rather than an overall government view. It will allow us all to find our place and live in the emerging new world.

So what did we learn from Star Trek? That different cultures can live together (for the most part) and contribute to overall society without losing their uniqeness. It gave us a glimpse of what the World can be like if we choose to "make it so". Crowdsourcing will allow more people to have a part in fiction becoming reality.

~Tina Stephens

Sketchup!

Chris.Fornof's picture

...the radical drop in the means of creative production (I'm not just talking about digital camcorders here--anyone seen Google's new Sketch-Up software? The makers of CAD software should be very, very afraid)

I picked up SketchUp on a whim last summer, and it's an incredible piece of software. I could go on for pages about the brilliant ways that they speed up the 3d modeling process and about how amazing it is, but you really need to try it out for yourself. The tools that I have at my fingertips today would have been worth millions but a decade or so ago. But over this short period of time they've become dirt cheap and accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Thing change very quickly these days.

-Chris
