We are getting lots of great comments.

Some have started raging conversations. Others we want to keep as references, to hone in on discussions or because they simple don't fit on any other thread right now. So I've collected some below.

Perhaps we will can find a place for these as filed reporting in specific assignment? Or maybe they will become raging conversations again inside this thread? Let's find out.

Crowd-sourcing Consumption?

Mykola Bilokonsky's picture

There's a lot of thought right now about crowd-sourcing the production of various media, but what about crowdsourcing its consumption? I realize this becomes sort of a recursive loop but here's what I mean:

Most copies of Sun Tzu's Art of War, I believe, have not only Sun Tzu's original text but also commentary written by several notable contemporaries. The final product we get is richer because of this "crowdsourcing" - even if the crowd does admittedly consist of other experts. What does it mean that it's now hard to distinguish the author of the text, especially in light of the fact that the ones infringing on Sun Tzu's authority are actually other readers?

Also, look at (post?)modernist literature. One cannot read Finnegans Wake by just sitting down and turning the pages - this is a text that demands a whole host of readers collaborating into a sort of collective, mutual understanding. The text was written with this sort of response in mind - it explodes the canon and works on the idea that a group of diverse readers will be much more effective at coming to a meaningful understanding than an expert who is familiar with the standard literary/historical canon.

These are two examples that jump into my head - can you think of other ways that media consumption is crowdsourced? How is this useful? What are the drawbacks? Can anything sweeping and meaningful be said about this process?

[this was cross-posted to the blog in my column here]

Blogs?

Maurreen Skowran's picture

It seems that you basically described most blogs.

Yes, some blogs are original producers of material, but most (and this is not a bad thing) are involved in some sort of re-blogging. They take an original article or even another blog post, the product, and then they link to it, maybe cite part of it and then add their own commentary. They are acting as both consumers and producers at once. Consuming someone else's work and ideas, adding onto it and then passing it down the line for another blog to consume and produce. There is definitely your recursive loop in there.

I'm not exactly sure if I would term this crowdsourcing consumption, of course I'm not a big fan of the term crowdsourcing at all, but this seems to fit your initial example.

Up with Controversy

I see what you mean although I wouldn't phrase it as re-blogging more of an up-take on an old matter unresolved and readdressed. Any threat that constantly sticks to its "original producers" intended subject and is in agreement could in that case be considered re-blogging. Ware as if there was no re-blogging the thread would loose validity or would be a very controversial thread with no one in agreement. In that perspective continuation of a tread from a person who is of the same mind as the original producer is considered to be re-blogging.

Ware would we be with out re-blogging? Mmm....... argueing.......... Down with re-blogging!

*BREAKING* Talking Points Memo uses Crowdsourcing to Analyze DOJ

Jeff Howe's picture

The raw research power of the crowd never fails to amaze me. Want to see the promise of crowdsourced investigative journalism? Check out Talking Points Memo today. At 1 AM last night TPM posted 3,000 emails concerning the US Attorney firings that had been released by the Department of Justice earlier in the day. Nine hours later the emails had generated 36,000 words of commentary parsing the emails for political intent, willful obfuscation, general GOP hijinks. Today’s TPM coverage contains several revelations that readers dug up, and they're still reading. The sheer speed of the work is stunning.

Snack Culture brings Low Resolution Culture?

Gustavo Mini's picture

After read the snack culture report I started to imagine a kind of son of snack culture: the lorez culture (low resolution). I dont know if this is a specific third worl topic, where most people dont have access to ultimate technology... but the fact is, as technology approaches, people really have low expectations about the resolution of the content. Let me give some examples... here in Brazil everybody has cellphones with really low resolution cameras. And this is not a big problem for people. They are ok with their lorez pictures, because for most of the is what they can afford. People are ok too with these cheap PC speakers and we have an entire generation listening to mp3 in those crap!

Last week I was in a very big seminar about digital culture in advertising and there was a big plotted image from a Petrobrás place at Second Life. The plotter was really huge and the pixels were as big as CDs... nobody noticed, nobody said a word about... I think people was ok with that because of their experience with Second Life, wich is very lorez too....

Relationships are getting lorez...

I dont know... what do you think about?

Newsvine, Nonfiction and Let's Get Started

Mykola Bilokonsky's picture

I recently posted this article over at darkside.newsvine.com. It's a call to action to get the community interested in asking some questions and finding some answers with regards to crowdsourced nonfiction. If you're at all interested in the subject, I urge you to swing by and weigh in - if you don't have a newsvine account, you should, so feel free to come by and check it out.

I have some other thoughts to post here, though. Let's start a discussion about what exactly crowdsourced nonfiction is. The assignment page here is pretty specifically focussed on books, but is this a good idea? Why draw that line - isn't it almost a purely academic distinction now anyway? Can't we include wikipedia among crowdsourced nonfiction books? Why or why not? Aren't a lot of the reasons why it's not a "book" (dynamically updated, virtually infinite authorship, too huge for print publication, etc) also the reasons why it's considered crowdsourced? What does this say in general about the practice of crowdsourcing when it comes to large collections of knowledge? What are the implications for print publishing? Is print going the way of VHS and objective morality? Or is this something that print gives us that a truly dynamic, crowdsourced format can't?

Put another way, in a sense pure crowdsourcing seems to be at odds with the print medium; if crowdsourcing is on its way in, is print necessarily on its way out?

Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award

This is a great opportunity for a story about children's books. The Banco del Libro will receive the Astrid Lindgren award on May 30th and it is around this date that a story should be published for maximum audience penetration. This is not only a unqiue perspective into the world of books, but also into the social and cultural happenings of Venezuela under the presidency of Hugo Chavez; striving to make a difference in the world under tough economic conditions. The books published by the Banco del Libro's editorial house Ekaré are some of the best children's books world wide and it would be great to highlight some of their books, especially the series about indigenous folklore or the founder's book "La calle es libre" about life in a shanty town. Given all the elements (global importance, children, books, education, social and the human story) it's an easy article to write well enough but with the right journalists (maybe some that speak Spanish) it could be an amazing article.

A grim anniversary: Four years have passed since the invasion in

Common_Oblivion's picture

I’ve been reading the various interesting subjects here in The Exchange about how croudsourcing can change and reform aspects of the World Wide Web and our lives as well. Since Bush administration ordered the assault in Iraq the world press took sides either for or against it. It is obvious that the alarming voices against the attack were ignored only to be proven true in time.
I‘d like to ask: Can we raise our voices against governments and make a difference? Can croudsourcing help people to get informed about global events more accurately without the economical and political costs? In the long run, can a person’s thorough research in Tokyo make a difference in a decision in the E.U? I look forward hearing your thoughts.

UNICEF Begins new project to distribute clean water around the w

RWilliamKing's picture

See http://www.businessweek.com/investor/content/mar2007/pi20070320_707262.h...

UNICEF has begun a new project that launches March 22 in New York City. The premise: asking diners at restaurants to donate $1.00 US for the standard glass of water that is normally given to you for free. The proceeds of this go to UNICEF's programs to help a quoted 1.1 billion people around the world to get clean drinking water.

- What kind of programs are implemented to further this task?
- What specific kinds of technologies are employed at these locations? (Filters, Wells, Pumps, Dams)
- Do any of these programs propose environmentally unsound/sound objectives?

It sounds like an excellent idea and probably has the potential to raise a lot of revenue, but I think that more information should be given about exactly how UNICEF plans to accomplish this goal.

What's Missing in "The World Is Flat"?

Crowdsourcing might show up in "The World Is Flat" release 3.0 now, I'm guessing. However, there is one important thing that should be in globalization 0.1, but wasn't discussed by either Friedman or Wikinomic. I know what it is, and I'm starting to write about it myself.

I wonder whether other people have discovered the same thing or have discovered some other missing elements in those great books about the world and collaboration.

Table for Joe Six Pack

Maurreen Skowran's picture

I expect that "crowdsourcing" (both the word and idea) is foreign to many people.

I think that one way to give it more meaning to the masses is to give them an easy way to find where it intersects with their lives and their interests.

In other words, I'm suggesting that part of our product be a dynamic table or database, possibly with the ability to let readers add stuff somehow.

People could find stuff not just by subject field (such as arts), but also by what they want to do within that field, such as share their photos freely, sell their photos, buy photos cheaply, or get free photos.

A related idea would be a table comparing traditional and crowdourced entities that are otherwise similar.

ELECTRONIC CAMPAIGNING FOR PRESIDENT ON THE INTERNET

arthurone's picture

ONE (FORMER) ACTIVE MEMBER’S
EXPERIENCE @ BARACKOBAMA.COM

Having caught the Buzz for Barack Obama even before his Announcement for President I was poised to be enthusiastic when I tuned in to hear him make it Official on February 10, 2006, from frigid Springfield, Illinois.

I immediately signed up as a member at the new BarackObama.com Website as apparently did 70,000 or more other Americans from coast to coast within days. While I later learned the Website which appeared to be the ultimate candidate Website of all time was in fact off the shelf software from Blue Stare Digital out of Washington, DC. It was the very same platform employed by the National Democratic Party for their Website. Still the Obama Website was impressive. It seemed to reflect Obama’s mantra that this was not his campaign but each of ours.

It certainly seemed like a platform where everyone would be equal and those with the most enthusiasm, talent and displaying innovation and being articulate would quickly rise in their importance to the campaign. I was both impressed but while also remaining somewhat skeptical. Would this truly be a new generation of campaign organization. A type of campaign never seen before. It sure looked like it might be.

At the same time as both a participant in and observer of campaigns for quite awhile my views were tempered by healthy Skepticism. In the past no matter how candidates have described their campaign organizations I have always found them to be “command-control” organizations. Often in the extreme. Or put another way the rigidity hierarchies that characterize most campaigns could put the military to shame.

Major campaigns most of all Presidential candidates attract the professionals political types. Those that move between campaigns and insider positions on the staffs of one elected official or another. Along with others who do politics as a full time profession. Inevitably they are the types who circle any Presidential candidate and become his or her Inner Circle. Others may enter by invitation only. That means everyone else including most major contributors. That means everyone else is on the outside looking in. The Inner Circle preserves its status and its prerogatives by keeping others out.

At the very lowest part of the hierarchy are the local “volunteers.” Necessary even adored foot soldiers. But always foot soldiers. Never more. At BarackObama.com I sensed something different might be happening. Good bye controlling Insiders hello flat democratic meritocracy.

Wrong.

My first hint that the “members” of BarackObama.com were nothing more than typical volunteers electronically controlled and that the REAL campaign was elsewhere was the curious lack of any WHO WE ARE page on the Website. Not a single hint who were the important individuals with Barack’s campaign or for that matter even with the Website.

Anonymity was the coin of the Realm. Just as it has always been in the world of campaign volunteers. Sure if you dug you could come up with names as I did but why was that necessary if those was an inclusive transparent campaign. Two individuals finally identified themselves restrictively.

Of course as I later realized the point of being anonymous was to discourage volunteers from thinking they had a relationship with the Inner Circle that might lead them to believe that directly emailing or calling them as fellow members of Barack’s team was acceptable. Staff had more important things to do than communicate with volunteers. Like run the REAL campaign.

Still the structure of the Website has an inherent participatory backbone. Any member can create groups on the Website, have their own Blog, develop events and extend emails to all the members of the various groups to which one might join.

From that point of view each of us did have the right to try and participate and gather the interest of other members. As I did. I had one of the most active Blogs on the Website. Indeed I took it upon myself to detail the Obama campaign staff for all the members when the Website did not. I made a constant flow of recommendations to make the “self organizing” campaign even better. I began to gather a sizable number of what are called on the Website “friends.” These are individuals who ask to be part of your personal presence and publicly identified with you. I was up to 60 friends before I was cut off. But I am getting ahead of myself.

I also began innovating with Skype creating conference calls and even radio shows on Skype called Skypecasts. When the Website suspiciously failed to alert members to Barack Obama fund raisers specifically in New Yortk City on Friday, March 9th I found way to spread the word on the Website. Especially for a $100 a ticket event that many members would be very interested in. I myself worked the phones to sell tickets for another fund raiser that very evening at $1000 per person.

I even heard that I had quickly come to the attention of much of the official staff in Chicago because of my significant visibility on the Website as confirmed by one of those staff members in a phone call for me. It turns out all this attention was not necessarily favorable. It appeared to them I was trying to break into the Inner Circle uninvited and without proper credentials by taking the Website at its word and very actively engaging it. Plus using my own communicative skills to gain the attention of others.

I was about to learn the Truth about BarackObama.com and have my concerns about old style “command-control” campaigning confirmed. You were “safe” at BarackObama.com as long as you appreciated that this was a traditional volunteers Website with new bells and whistles and that members were volunteers certainly not unpaid staff.

I got phone calls warning me that I was wrong in calling to sell tickets for the Obama $1000 a person fund raiser saying that “ I was calling from the Barack Obama campaign.” Exactly where was I calling from ? I was told to tell the individuals on the lists I was calling that I was a volunteer who had no direct involvement with the Barack Obama campaign and no status with the campaign whatsoever but would they but a $1000 ticket from me anyway. What a novel way to sell tickets to a candidate’s fund raiser.

Then although I had been promised entry to both events at the Grand Hyatt in New York City on March 9th by the Obama fund raiser I was coordinating with, on the morning of March the 9th he informed me he was told to bar me from both events. I said I would pay. They said no thanks. You cannot go.

When I sent a message to my 60 “friends” telling them I was disappointed I quickly got an email from the campaign telling me to either send a new email at once telling my friends that the campaign did not bar me from the events ( which they did ) but that rather than the fund raising coordinator had no right to make me that promise so the “campaign” would not honor it. OK maybe I should not have agreed to send you such a “clarification” but faced with being removed from the membership if I did not I did. I should have realized there was more to come.

I quickly came to realize not only mine but that other individuals were having their communications on the Website carefully monitored. A few days later when I simply sent out a message on the Website recommending that Barack Obama gain some points calling for Attorney General Gonzalez’ dismissal as Hillary Clinton had, I was quickly and all those I had emailed told by a full time staffer that I was “”misusing’ the listserve function.

Whe I did nothing more than respond with an email that I disagreed with him, I was next sent a very official sounding email that my profile was being removd from the Website and that I must never again utilize the Website for any reason. My membership was terminated and I was barred from the Campaign. Could I appeal. NO. Could I get a statementt specifing why I was removed. NO I could not. I even went so far as to call Senator Obama’s office in Washington, DC asking to speak to come one to realate my experience and disappointment. None of those repeated call were returned.

I am currently searching for a new candidate to support.

The Nature of Virtualization

-e.mo-'s picture

Was reading on virtualization in teamwork settings (crowdsourcing?) and came across some ideas that reminded me of this project. You may especially relate to the bit about the dynamics of relationships...

While there are similarities between proximal and virtual teamwork, there are also differences that may affect performance. As an example, proximal team membership enables communication and coordination of work in ways that are constrained in virtual teams as a result of distance, time lags, and technology media that have varying degrees of richness. The virtual environment has less externally supplied structure, is more isolated, and creates greater degrees of ambiguity about tasks and interpersonal relationships than in proximal settings . As virtualization increases, research shows that both formal and informal interaction decreases, and it becomes increasingly difficult to model team members' approaches to tasks, monitor work progress, or convey non-verbal information that establish normative or structural expectations, which constrict shared meaning and cooperation.

In response, there are variations in the ways teams organize, communicate, coordinate, and monitor work as teams become increasingly virtualized. To help compensate for the lack of structure and elevated ambiguity created by virtualization, people turn to formal structures such as written rules and procedures. When rules and procedures are lacking, people use the organizational hierarchy (rather than each other) as the primary method for managing group goals and overcoming ambiguity. These conditions conspire to depersonalize the social environment, which leads to objectification. Objectification or depersonification attenuates social influences.

The Nature of Social Influences

As teams interact they undergo a variety of social influences that shape both perceptions of effectiveness as well as performance. Social influences determine how shared meaning is co-created and structured using the participants' social systems in a group setting. As people interact, they tend to become increasingly cohesive and their ideas become increasingly congruent. For example, highly cohesive groups make similar attributions of others.

Social influence theory postulates two forms of influences: normative influences that are used to levy or gain approval or avoid rejection, such as with peer pressure, and informational influence that stems from efforts to acquire accurate perceptions, such as in seeking expert advice. The power of social influence increases as teams interact and identify with one another. This condition governs communication and cooperative behavior and impacts cohesion.

As social influences and cohesion increase, teams tend to fall prey to groupthink, resulting in decisions that are often based on incomplete information and failing to consider alternatives and risks. And as social influences and cohesion increase, teams tend to diffuse risk leading to the taking more extreme positions than occur otherwise, along with greater incidence of pluralistic ignorance in which people will conform to norms with which they personally disagree. Conversely, as social influence decreases, there is a greater tendency toward group polarization where people within a group tend to be more extreme in their decisions to moderate the group's position, and social loafing in which people use group effort to diffuse their own lack of personal commitment.

The article goes on to test these notions. For results see the full piece.

Crown Corruption

I am writing to update you on a human rights issue I have been enforcing.

Over the past 9 months I have been involved in a violation of human rights issue. This began for me in May 06 with the engineering of bail acts and illegal imprisonment. Shortly following 2 men visited me in Barlinnie prison. I was drugged and interrogated, the questions were of a personal nature. The drugs used prohibited my ability to communicate and affected my memory.

Shortly following my release I was again interrogate in a facility in Alloa. Shortly after this again happen Glasgow as I was u willing to co-operate with these terrorists. The next day I was again imprisoned, the judge was given a letter telling him to do so as this was to become normal practice in my involvement in the judicial system.

When I was in prison for the second time the agents again interrogated me on a number of occasions. On the final two occasions I was operated on. A small device was implanted in the back of my neck. I was conscious at all times.
The week following (19/10/06) I was at my intermediate trial. I informed Judge Kristy (Glasgow district court) of my circumstances. The judge immediately released me from the remand against what he was normally obliged to do.
This device is used to manipulate brain activity, incapacitate and operate on my brain remotely including multiple forms of torture. It also allows these people to interact with me socially/suggestive, manipulate my opinions and beliefs. Affecting my actions in day-to-day life, I have been subjected to a multitude of scenarios, many of these degrading, dangerous and concocted by sick minds.
I continue enforce justification and human rights regardless of the on going assaults that are religiously being carried out on me. I have met a number of people who have also experienced a similar violation to a lesser degree. Most of them too scared of loosing what little freedom they have. As a result are more willing to live with the violation than risk the reprisal of pursing justification. Despite my efforts these people continue their assault on me.

I am no longer shocked with the number of officials in power who are supporting these corrupt low lives as it is apparent they are them as admitted by Ross M Human rights consultant (Scottish justice department)”I cant help you it would be a conflict of interest”. I am furious with the disgrace these terrorists bring my country. The people involved have shown profound incompetence and immaturity when dealing with me although has shown a great ability in orchestrating other government departments. I am not willing to attempt reason with these fraudulent people. I have taken a number of measures to protect myself; including keeping a log of events and ensured people close to me have a copy. I am in contact with computing experts who have also taken measures. The signal is being copied to ensure the information is available, as charge is required to hold these terrorists accountable for their actions. I have also contacted/spoken with a number of other organizations and people Home office, The Scottish Executive etc. The Lord Advocate & Crown office who have told me that this is not an area they can assist me in and know of no organization in Scotland that would be obliged to offer any assistance, Previous to my arrival to the city I had contacted Elspeth Attwool MEP who has told me she informed a case worker who’s investigation is on going, Scottish prison service is unwilling to speak with me other than make a brief comment on the phone stating that they have no obligation in this matter, Anne McGuire MP for the Stirlingshire area has ended her inquires in to the matter with the comment “I don’t understand why they would do this to you” (19/01/07), Inspector Johnson/Archibald (central Scotland police) informed me of his knowledge of the project and since has been most unhelpful. Mark Lorowicz MP for Leith, Edinburgh informed me “there is nothing as an MP I can do” before attempting to speak with me through his chip as he was aware I was recording the conversation. I have asked to defend myself at the court cases that have been engineered in an effort to keep me in a “controlled environment” on multiple occasions. Each time the case is quickly dismissed without giving the opportunity to speak. I was at court recently (16/03/07) for a case that I had only recently been informed I was involved in. My co-accused was charged with an unrelated matter. He attempted to plead guilty. His guilty plea was refused. Sheriff Robb (Stirling sheriff court) expressed contempt for the decision not to accept the plea. I then requested to defend myself and was told I could not speak on a number of occasions I continued on to defend myself. I briefly told the sheriff of the circumstances surrounding the case. The sheriff made no comment. We were dismissed from the stand. I then left the court. Yesterday (28/03/07) I was at the trial. My supposed co-accused and myself were the first case called. I informed the lawyer sent to defend me that I would be defending myself. At this point the case was recessed for two hours. When the case was called the fiscal informed the court she did not wish the court to allow me to defend myself, questioned my competence but could give the court no explanation for this insult. The sheriff said, ”you’re not giving me anything” and allowed the case to continue for a few minutes. A lawyer I have dealt with previously then asked for a short recesses to speak with me. I expressed that I was unwilling to prolong this case any longer than necessary. The sheriff allowed a 10min adjournment. The fiscal stated she had another trial waiting and the judge adjourned it for 2 more hours. The lawyer then made an effort to persuade me not to continue offered to provide evidence he should not have had. In an effort to allow the judge to bring the matter to an end with out the necessity of a prolonged trial (no witnesses, no need for me to defend myself). After the adjournment the fiscal informed the judge that she was unwilling to continue the case that day as she was “too busy”. The judge agreed to allow the case to continue on another date, set another intermediate trial three months away and trial to be commenced late June. I at this point protested, accused the fiscal of corruption threatened the court, and walked out confirming the judges statement of me being allowed to leave. I had another engineered case in Glasgow (23/03/07) the night before documents concerning the case were taken from my residence. I acquired new documents making me five minutes late for the case. The case had been called a warrant had been granted, I was not allowed to speak to the judge or enter the courtroom but no arrest was made by the police officer informing me of this. My residence was also ransacked and documents and disks relating to this matter were stolen with other items (13/03/07). I have again sent e-mails to a number of human rights organisations and various officials I believed could assist me. I have received no response. The letters I send rarely reach their destination through the postal service rarely are my e-mail accounts accessible the day following registration. I have pursued the matter in various cities across the country and have met a number of people who also are unwilling to allow this matter to continue unchallenged, and others who support it. I have moved to the countries capital in hope of enforcing our human rights and justification and that I whole-heatedly intend to do.

I am writing to you, as I believe this issue would be one you mite consider addressing in Assignment Zero.
I have not received my password for my other registration (Buffalosoleja) can you send it to my new e-mail addy
